In this video we show you step by step how signing up for a Jimdo website works.
Signing up for a Jimdo Site and registering a domain name
In this tutorial I will show you how to sign up for a free Jimdo website and also, what kind of domain name options you have get with Jimdo.
To sign up you first have to pick a name for your new website.
Please note that you don’t need to type in http or www here. Pick any name that you like and which is still available. This name will be attached to your site, basically forever.
But if you later decide to get your own domain name this will function more like an internal name for your site. With the paid plans Jimdo Pro and Jimdo Business, you can have your own proper domain name, like mywebsite.com.
Jimdo offers a whole range of different domain name endings such as .com, .net, .info and a couple of country-specific endings. Additionally, you can purchase your own email account for this domain in those packages. It will look like firstname.lastname@example.org, for example.
What if you already own a domain name?
Once you’ve upgraded to a paid Jimdo plan you can either
- transfer it to Jimdo for free (this is the easier option)
- or keep the domain at your current provider and point it to your Jimdo site.
Which option should you choose? Leaving your domain name at your current provider (e.g. GoDaddy) only makes sense if you want to use subdomains (Jimdo doesn’t support subdomains) or if you want to continue using your existing email setup. In most other scenarios it’s better to transfer the domain name to Jimdo and to cancel the subscription to your current provider. This way you won’t pay twice for your domain.
The second option is a bit technical. To point your domain to Jimdo you have to change the nameserver records for your domain. Find more details here. If you are not sure what to do, please ask the company where you bought the domain name for help.
If, at some point, you decide to go back to the free plan, you can still use your dot jimdo.com domain name without paying anything. Now enter your email address tick this box and finish the registration. An email will be sent to you containing your login information.
If you want to upgrade directly to Jimdo Pro or Business here’s the place to do that.
